Description

So I recently learned how to do a loop stitch. I had an idea in mind of something I wanted to make, but as I started making it, I realized it looked a lot like Rufflet's head, so I changed it into a Rufflet. I think this is probably one of the most amazing things I've done, and as such, I'm really proud of how it turned out. I thought about crocheting the feather on his head, but doing it in painted felt just looked neater. I'd say the most tedious part was actually the feet though, and not the head. I made each of his toes and claws as separate pieces, and then sewed them all together.

I would be glad to take commissions for him, but unfortunately, he's not going to be cheap. The loop stitch is slightly more time consuming than regular crochet, and he had a lot of pieces on him. My price for him would have to be $40, plush shipping. That's accounting for time and materials.

In any case, here is the pattern for him:

Rufflet Plushie

Materials:
Off White yarn
Dk. Blue/Colonial Blue yarn
Yellow yarn
Black yarn
white felt scraps
black, white, and red paint
stuffing
yarn needle for sewing
two different sized crochet hooks (I used H/8 (6 mm(?)) and a G/6 (4.25 mm))

This pattern will require a loop stitch. It's basically just like a single crochet, only you loop the yarn around your finger first, before pulling up the first loop. Here's a good tutorial on it: [link]

Head/Body (rnds 2-16, and 18-21 are worked in loop st, but I will write it as "sc")

1: with off white, 6 sc in magic ring (6)
2: inc x6 (12)
3: (inc, sc) x6 (18)
4: (inc, 2 sc) x6 (24)
5: (inc, 3 sc) x6 (30)
6: even rnd
7: (inc, 4 sc) x6 (36)
8-12: even rnds
13: (dec, 4 sc) x6 (30)
14: even rnd
15: (dec, 3 sc) x6 (24)
16: (dec, 2 sc) x6 (18)
17: BLs only, even rnd
Stuff Head.
18: (inc, 2 sc) x6 (24)
19: (inc, 3 sc) x6 (30)
20-21: even rnds, change to Dk. Blue in last st.
22-26: even rnds
27: 9 sc, (dec, 3 sc) x2, dec, 9 sc (27)
28: 8 sc, (dec, 2 sc) x2, dec, 9 sc (24)
Stuff Body.
29: (dec, 2 sc) x6 (18)
30: (dec, sc) x6 (12)
31: dec x6 (6)
Finish off, weave end through last 6 sc, pull together, tie off, weave in end.

Wings (make 2)

1: with Dk. Blue, 6 sc in magic ring (6)
2: (inc, 2 sc) x2 (8)
3: (inc, 3 sc) x2 (10)
4: even rnd
5: (inc, 4 sc) x2 (12)
6-7: even rnds
8: (dec, 4 sc) x2 (10)
9: even rnd
Stuff lightly
10: (dec, 3 sc) x2 (8)
11: even rnd
12: (dec, 2 sc) x2 (6)
13: even rnd
Finish off, weave end through last 6 sc, pull together, tie off, weave in end. Sew to sides of body.

Face

1: with Dk. Blue, 6 sc in magic ring (6)
2: inc x6 (12)
3: (inc, sc) x6 (18)
4: ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hk, hdc in next ch, slip st in next sc, *ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hk, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, skip next sc, slip st in next sc, rep from * twice more, ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hk, hdc in next ch, 10 sc, slip st in next st
Finish off, sew to front of head, just above neck line. (this will be a bit hard to do over the loop stitches, but it helps to "stuff" behind the face a little bit).

Beak

1: with yellow, 4 sc in magic ring (4)
2: (inc, sc) x2 (6)
3: even rnd
4: (inc, 2 sc) x2 (8)
row 1: ch 1, turn, 4 sc (4)
rnd 5: ch 1, turn, inc, 2 sc, inc, dec over side and next sc, 2 sc, dec over next sc and side (10)
6: (inc, sc) x5 (15)
7: 4 sc, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next sc, 10 sc
Finish off, stuff, sew to front of face.

Tail (use smaller hook)

1: with off white, ch 6, inc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in next 3 ch, inc, working around to other side, inc in free lp of first ch, sc in next 3 ch, inc in last ch (14)
2: inc x2, 3 sc, inc x4, 3 sc, inc x2 (22)
3-4: even rnds (may need to subtract one stitch from the end of this rnd, to make it shape right).
5: (*dec over next 3 sc, 8 sc) x2 (18)
*to dec over 3 sts, pull up your loop, skip next sc, pull up a loop in next sc, then pull through all lps.
*the 3-st dec may leave a noticeable strand going into the rnd before, but on the next rnd, when you insert your hook into the stitch above it, you can also insert the hook into the strand before pulling up a loop to make it less noticeable.
6: even rnd (subtract one stitch from end of rnd), change to Dk. Blue in last st
7: (dec over 3 sts, 6 sc) x2 (14)
8: even rnd
9: (dec, 5 sc) x2 (12)
10: even rnd
Finish off, stuff very lightly, keeping mostly flat. Stitch lines on tail, using black yarn. Sew to back of body.

The feet are worked in three main parts; the legs, the toes (which are sewn to to the bottom edge of the leg, facing forward), and the claws (sewn to the front of the toes).

Legs (make 2) (use smaller hook for legs, toes, and claws)

1: with yellow, 6 sc in magic ring (6)
2: inc x6 (12)
3-9: even rnds
Finish off, stuff, sew to underside of body.

Toes (make 8)

1: with yellow, 6 sc in magic ring (6)
2: (inc, 2 sc) x2 (8)
3-5: even rnds
Finish off, stuff. Sew 3 toes to front of each leg, and 1 toe to back of each leg.

Claws (make 8)

1: with black, 4 sc in magic ring (4)
2: inc, 3 sc (5)
3: inc, 4 sc (6)
4: (inc, 2 sc) x2 (8)
Finish off, stuff very lightly, sew one claw to tip of each toe.

*Alternate toes (combined toe & claw, make 8)
1-4: work same as claw
5-8: work same as rnds 2-5 of toe
Finish off, same as toes. (maybe try only 7 total rnds?)

Make eyes from white felt, paint details on. Make feather from white felt, paint bottom half red. Glue felt pieces on. Weave a string through the front toes, pull tight, and fasten in place, to keep them from sticking in all directions.
